Frequently Asked Questions
In the heart of the Basque Country, the Rhune massif forms a natural border between France and Spain.
Its peak, at 905 metres, is slightly rounded, typical of the Pyrenean mountains.
La Rhune is a little corner of paradise for hikers who can see herds of sheep and also free-living horses, the pottoks, small ponies with a morphology reminiscent of the prehistoric paintings adorning the walls of the caves in the region.
If you have chosen a hotel near the Rhune massif, you can reach the top of the mountain by taking a seat on an old rack railway that has been running since 1924.
It starts at the Saint Ignace pass and the journey takes just over half an hour.
This is an original way to reach one of the most beautiful views in the Basque Country without tiring.
On the way, you will also see remains, dolmens or cromlechs, witnesses of the occupation of the area since prehistoric times.
Don't leave the region without visiting the small village of Sare, which is home to some real architectural treasures, including the fortified church of Saint Martin and several redoubts that are part of the fortifications of the Rhune.
These military infrastructures were built towards the end of the 18th century, during the 1793 campaign between Spain and Portugal and France.
