It was in 1940 that four young teenagers discovered by chance the cave located in the Vézère valley, in the heart of the Périgord.
The beauty of its cave paintings quickly attracted a host of tourists, but this success led to a deterioration of the works.
In 1963, the cave was closed to the public in order to preserve them.
However, an identical cave was rebuilt to allow visitors to contemplate the drawings, paintings and sculptures of Cro Magnon man, who already used different techniques to express his art.
There are a few figures of men and many representations of animals, bulls, horses, deer, ibex, cats and bears, sometimes isolated, sometimes staged.
The Lascaux cave was probably never inhabited and according to the most common interpretation of prehistorians, it was probably a sacred place, which explains the few everyday objects found during the excavations.
