This 720 kilometre long route crosses the French Alps from one side to the other, between Thonon-les-Bains and Nice.

The route was conceived at the beginning of the 20th century by the Touring Club de France in order to promote tourism in the region by linking the different valleys.
The project was supported by the State, which quickly understood the military interest of a border road with Italy.
Nowadays, the role of the road is limited to its touristic aspect and is very frequented by bikes, motorbikes and cars which can cross the natural parks of Ecrins, Vanoise and Mercantour and discover the numerous typical mountain villages of the Alps, notably La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Srre Chevalier or Barcelonnette.
