Frequently Asked Questions
In 650, the Abbey of Maroilles was founded by the Count of Famars in the Avesnois region to accommodate Benedictine monks.
It became a royal abbey at the beginning of the 9th century and an episcopal abbey attached to the bishopric of Cambrai in the following century.
The abbey then lived off its own income and the taxes paid by the owners of the cheese cows, called craquegnon at that time.
This is how Maroilles cheese was created, which now has an AOC.
During the Revolution, the abbey was stormed by the inhabitants of Taisnières who looted and dismantled part of the buildings in order to recover the building materials.
Today, visitors can still discover the mill, the Sunday barn, the guest house and the porter's lodge.
During your stay in the Hauts-de-France, don't miss a stopover in a hotel in Artres to visit the Abbey of Maroilles but also Valenciennes, a city known for its numerous monuments, its culinary specialities, its local products and especially for its cultural events, festivals, processions, regattas and hot air balloons.
The Logis du Nord also recommend booking a room at the Moulin d'Artres, an ideal place to spend an unforgettable romantic weekend in the middle of the gardens.
