This was our 4th visit to this hotel, but it may be our last. Until early this year the Hostellerie Saint Louis was run by the Dubreucq family. Last year (2024) we got the impression that Mme Dubreucq might be preparing to hand over to the next generation of the family. However, soon after checking in, we discovered that the hotel is now run by M. Bouchaert and his family.
Firstly, though, let me state that the food was at least as good, and possibly even better, than on our previous visits. But...
On the Logis website, it states "You will be welcomed by M. Michel Bouchaert". Unfortunately this was not the case, and to the best of my belief, M. Bouchaert made no appearance during our stay.
On arriving the reception desk was unstaffed. We rang the bell, and waited. There was a young woman standing behind the bar across the hall, but when I looked in her direction, she turned away and diasappeared. After waiting about 5 minutes, someone finally appeared to greet us and provide us with our room key. She asked if we wanted dinner, and I said yes, but that I had already had an e-mail that morning from Gaëlle stating that she had booked us a table. Her response was along the lines of "sorry, I must have forgotten."
During the course of the evening it became clear that this woman was having to run the restaurant and bar almost single handedly, as although there were two other women and one man on duty, they seemed to spend most of the time hanging around behind the bar (this did change a bit as more customers arrived).
We ordered our food, but were unable to order any wine as the wine list was not included with our menus, although it was clear that it should have been. We were given wine lists, but then waited about 15 minutes for our wine order to be taken. I ordered Bourgeuil; my partner Côtes du Rhône Rosé. While I got the correct wine, my partner was brought Côtes du Rhône Blanc. This was corrected.
Our food now arrived, and it was, as in previous years, really excellent.
However, when my partner asked for a second glass of Côtes du Rhône Rosé, both her empty glass AND her full glass of water were taken away. In due course both were replaced by TWO glasses of what was, again, Côtes du Rhône Blanc.
Correction was requested - again(!), but the server had no idea how to handle the situation. She summoned the one person who did know what she was doing, who replaced one of the glasses of white with rosé, and said that we might as well keep the second one.
At the end of the meal, we waited for what had been this hotel's unique selling point - their "fameux chariot de desserts", a wonderful glass double deck trolley filled with a huge choice of puddings. You can order up to three puddings. The chariot duly arrived, and looked to be in excellent condition; the puddings were again excellent - in fact probably even better than I remembered.
In the morning, for obvious reasons, I asked to check the restaurant bill carefully. The two glasses of Côtes du Rhône Rosé were still described as "Blanc", but as the price was the same for the Rosé, it did not matter. However, the bill had gained an additional glass of beer and a pot of tea. There was a completely different team on duty in the morning, and the woman who was checking us out had also been run off her feet during breakfast. But she was still happy to remove the extras from the restaurant bill on her own resposibility. And again, no apparent sign of a member of the Bouchaert family.
Mme Dubreucq had always been present during both dinner + breakfast, talking to all the customers, keeping an eye on everything. The new owners should take a leaf out of her book!
We shall consider carefully whether to return next time - the hotel is ideally placed for a stopover the night before taking the ferry from Dunkerque, or even Calais, and the food still makes the place worth a visit, but the service really needs serious attention.
Lovely and helpful staff, quiet setting in nice garden.
For dinner, come early. Kitchen closes 8:45, great healthy food; bar open till 9:30.. we took glasses up to the room, no problem.
Suites are fantastic value!
Breakfast great, fresh, varied
Would only make it easier to book directly and not through booking
Fabulous when crossing to/from France. Under renovation and getting better all the time
friendly welcome, new owners with the same staff
Very short stay so didn’t take advantage of the restaurant which looked really good or the breakfast which also looked enticing, maybe next time.
