Frequently Asked Questions
If you are familiar with the silhouette of Mont Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence, it is probably because you have seen it many times in the works of Paul Cézanne.
Indeed, the artist depicted it more than 50 times in his paintings.
But the Montagne Sainte-Victoire is above all one of the favourite peaks for hikers and green tourism enthusiasts, as it offers a multitude of possibilities for walking and discovering the local flora and fauna.
Don't hesitate to book your hotel with a view of the Cross of Provence, which rises to an altitude of 946 metres.
The first wooden cross was erected here by a 16th century sailor in gratitude for surviving a shipwreck.
The Croix de Provence soon became a place of pilgrimage.
It has been replaced three times and the present cross was installed in 1875 by Abbé Meissonnier to protect France against plagues.
Although the Cross is accessible by car, many pilgrims and tourists prefer to take the footpaths to reach it.
The walk is not difficult for good walkers and passes by the 17th century priory and a small refuge located about 50 metres from the Cross.
At the top, you will enjoy a view of the valley and the Crêtes de Sainte-Victoire with its highest point, the Pic des Mouches at 1011 metres.
